The final line-up has just been announced for the Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival, returning from 1–10 May 2026—and it’s shaping up to be one of the town’s biggest and most exciting cultural events of the year.

With over 150 artists, authors and performers taking part across 56 events and 10 venues, there’s plenty to look forward to. From thought-provoking talks to creative workshops and live performances, the festival brings together a brilliant mix of voices and ideas right in the heart of Tunbridge Wells.

This year, there are more than 8,000 seats available, including 2,000 “pay what you can” tickets, alongside a range of free activities and performances. Whether you’re planning a full festival itinerary or just dipping into a couple of events, there are plenty of accessible options. That said, tickets have already been selling quickly—so it’s worth booking sooner rather than later if something catches your eye.

The 2026 line-up features an exciting mix of well-known names and emerging talent. Expect to see Gyles Brandreth celebrating 100 years of Winnie the Pooh, Donna Ashworth in conversation with Davina McCall, and Rory Bremner bringing his signature comedy and satire to the stage.

There’s also a strong literary line-up, with appearances from poet Jess Mookherjee, historical novelist Essie Fox, and much-loved poet Brian Bilston. Award-winning writer Monique Roffey joins the programme too, alongside political commentator Iain Dale, who will be discussing his new book Thatcher with Mike Martin MP.

Festival Producer Sam Davey sums it up perfectly:

“There really is something for everyone at this year’s Literary Festival. From thought-provoking debate on journalism, activism and philosophy, to action on climate and the environment in association with TW Climate and Nature Fair. Alongside that, there are workshops and events covering everything from comedy and nature to Shakespeare, art, fantasy, adventure, cabaret, children’s literature, gothic subculture and, of course, Winnie the Pooh.”

One of the things that makes the festival so special is how it’s woven into the town itself. Events will take place across a range of much-loved venues including The Forum, Trinity Theatre, Assembly Hall Theatre, The Old Auction House, The Amelia and The Pump Room, as well as the festival village in Calverley Grounds over the May Bank Holiday weekend. It’s the perfect excuse to spend a day (or two) exploring Tunbridge Wells while soaking up some culture along the way.

Paul Reader, Managing Partner of Berry & Lamberts Solicitors, the festival’s headline sponsor, highlights this year’s theme:

“We are incredibly proud to support this year’s festival. The new energy and content is captured perfectly in the tagline: Books, Ideas, Action. Whilst books remain at the heart of the festival, it also embraces ideas and action—from addressing social issues and climate change to rekindling the lost art of letter writing. The 2026 festival is all about inspiring meaningful engagement with the world around us.”

If you’re looking for things to do in Tunbridge Wells this May, this is definitely one to have on your radar. Whether you’re a lifelong reader, a casual book lover, or just after a great day out, the festival offers a little bit of everything.
