The midnight Express Bus

My family and I were invited to stay on the Magic Express, a retired school bus turned magical getaway for up to eight people perfect for a unique stay in Kent. Think Harry Potter meets the Orient Express, with charm, mystery, and a touch of adventure around every corner. I can honestly say — it was one of the most quirky and charming stays our family has ever experienced!

The children were bursting with excitement the moment we arrived and caught sight of the stunning double-decker bus. It was like nothing we’d ever stayed in before — completely unique and utterly magical. As soon as we stepped aboard, we were enchanted. The attention to detail was incredible, with so many of the bus’s original features thoughtfully preserved. One of the biggest hits? The old driver’s seat and steering wheel, cleverly transformed into a gaming station — easily the kids’ favourite corner!

On the lower deck, alongside the gaming zone, was a cosy seating area that doubled as a dining space. We spent our evenings snuggled up there watching family films — it was the perfect spot to unwind together. There was also a compact but fully equipped kitchen and a stylish bathroom.

Upstairs was the sleeping area, with comfy beds — each one complete with a hot water bottle to keep us warm during the cooler nights. From the top deck, the countryside views were breathtaking — the perfect way to wake up. I soaked it all in from the freestanding roll-top bath (yes, there’s actually a bath on board!), which quickly became my favourite spot to relax.

Outside, the magic continued. There was a private hot tub and outdoor seating area great dining al fresco whilst taking in the views of the river. There was even a covered indoor seating nook — ideal for chillier evenings to hang out, relax and play some games.

Despite being a converted bus, it was wonderfully cosy inside thanks to central heating and a charming log burner, so it’s the perfect year-round retreat.

The Magic Express is perfectly located for exploring nearby gems like Canterbury and Whitstable, or for a fun family day out at places like Howletts Wildlife Park. The bus is part of a collection of imaginative, off-the-beaten-path stays created by Hooga Retreats — and we’re already dreaming about which one to visit next!
