What began as a simple act of self-care has blossomed into a beautifully mindful small business. For Roxxi, a teacher by day and candle maker by night, Wax & Whimsy Candle Co was born from a desire to slow down, reconnect, and bring a little serenity into everyday life.
Blending eco-friendly soy wax, thoughtfully curated scents, and the natural energy of crystals, each candle is crafted to spark joy, mindfulness, and a touch of magic.
In this interview, we chat with Roxxi about the inspiration behind Wax & Whimsy, the art of scent creation, the balance between teaching and entrepreneurship, and how candle-making has become both a personal sanctuary and a way to share calm with others.
Tell us about Wax & Whimsy Candle Co — what first inspired you to start creating candles, and how did the business begin?
In many ways, it began as a personal reset. I’m a teacher by day and a candle maker by night. After long, fast-paced days in the classroom, I started pouring eco-friendly soy candles as a way to slow down, breathe, and bring a little calm back into my busy world. What started as a simple act of self-care quickly grew into something I wanted to share.
Have you always been a creative person, or did candle-making unlock something new for you?
Honestly, no—I’ve never considered myself a creative person outside the classroom. My creativity usually shows up in lesson plans, teaching activities, and finding new ways to engage students, but not in the traditional artistic sense. Candle-making truly unlocked something new for me. It gave me a hands-on, calming outlet I didn’t even know I needed.
Blending scents, choosing colors, and creating something tangible from scratch felt completely different from anything I’d done before. What started as a way to unwind became a surprising source of joy and a new kind of creativity I’m grateful to have discovered.
What makes a Wax & Whimsy Candle Co creation unique?
What sets Wax & Whimsy Candle Co apart is the thoughtful blend of creativity, intention, and detail in every candle. Our hand-poured crystal candles combine carefully layered scents with the natural beauty and energy of crystals, creating more than just a candle — it’s an experience that engages both the senses and the spirit. Each candle becomes a personal expression, designed to bring joy, mindfulness, and a touch of magic into everyday life.

Can you walk us through your creative process — from choosing scents to pouring the final candle?
Creative Process at Wax & Whimsy Candle Co:
1. Inspiration & Concept: Everything starts with an idea — a feeling, a memory, a season, or a theme. I think about the mood I want the candle to evoke and the story it should tell.
2. Scent Selection: Choosing fragrances is both an art and a science. I experiment with combinations of essential oils and fragrance oils, testing different ratios to create layers of complexity. I consider how top, middle, and base notes interact to ensure the scent is balanced and evolves beautifully as it burns.
3. Colour & Design: Once the scent is finalised, I select colours and visual elements that complement it. Whether it’s a subtle gradient, a bold pop of colour, or added textures, the goal is to make the candle visually as well as aromatically appealing.
4. Pouring & Crafting: With scent and design ready, I move to pouring. Temperature, wax type, and wick selection are crucial here — each affects burn quality and scent throw. I pour carefully, layer if needed, and add finishing touches like hand-poured details or decorative elements.
5. Curing & Testing: After pouring, the candles need to cure so the wax and fragrance fully meld. I test burn them to make sure the scent disperses correctly, the wick burns evenly, and the candle delivers the experience I envisioned.
6. Final Touches & Packaging: Finally, each candle is labeled, packaged, and prepared to reach customers. I aim for each one to feel like a small piece of art, ready to enhance someone’s space and mood.
Do you have a favourite scent or collection you’ve made so far? What makes it special?
I do—although it tends to change with the seasons! One collection that remains especially meaningful to me is our crystal-infused candle collection. It brings together two things I love: soothing scents and the symbolic energy of crystals. Each candle is paired with a thoughtfully chosen crystal that reflects the mood or intention behind the fragrance, whether it’s calm, clarity, grounding, or a little uplifting spark.
This collection is special because it ties back to why I started Wax & Whimsy Candle Co in the first place. When I first began making candles to unwind after long teaching days, I was searching for small moments of peace and balance. The crystal-infused range captures that feeling perfectly—blending beautiful aromas with meaningful elements that help people create their own calming ritual at home.
How do you source your materials, and how important is sustainability in your work?
Sustainability is at the heart of everything I do at Wax & Whimsy Candle Co. From the beginning, I wanted my candles to feel good to use—not just because of the scent, but because of the values behind them. I source high-quality, eco-friendly materials, including natural soy wax, clean-burning cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrance oils as much as possible. I also work with trusted UK suppliers who prioritise ethical production and environmentally responsible practices.
For packaging, I choose recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable materials wherever possible, and I keep my designs intentionally minimal to reduce waste. Even the crystals in my crystal-infused collection are sourced with care, ensuring they come from responsible suppliers.
Sustainability isn’t an afterthought for me—it’s a guiding principle. As a teacher, I think a lot about the world we’re passing on, so creating products that are gentle on the environment feels not just important, but essential.
You also run candle-making workshops — what can people expect from the experience?
People can expect a fun, hands-on, and creative experience at our candle-making workshops. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to refine your skills, I guide participants through the process of making their own custom-scented candles from start to finish. You’ll learn about fragrance blending, color choices, and proper pouring techniques, all in a relaxed, supportive environment. By the end, you’ll take home a beautiful, personalized candle and a sense of accomplishment — plus, a few insider tips for making candles at home in the future. It’s part workshop, part creative escape, and always a lot of fun.

What do you enjoy most about teaching others your craft?
What I love most is seeing people discover their own creativity and sense of calm through candle-making. Many of the students I teach—whether in workshops or small classes—arrive feeling stressed or unsure about their artistic abilities. Watching them experiment, make mistakes, and then create something beautiful and personal is incredibly rewarding.
It’s also meaningful to share the mindful, intentional aspects of the craft: choosing scents, pouring carefully, and appreciating the process as much as the final product. Teaching reminds me why I started Wax & Whimsy Candle Co in the first place—it’s about creating moments of peace, connection, and joy, and helping others experience that same sense of calm and accomplishment.
What has been the most rewarding part of running Wax & Whimsy Candle Co — and what’s been the most challenging?
The most rewarding part of running Wax & Whimsy Candle Co has been creating something that brings joy and comfort to people’s everyday lives. Seeing customers connect with our scents, make our candles part of their routines, or share how much they love them is incredibly fulfilling. It’s also been amazing to watch a personal passion grow into a business that resonates with others.
The biggest challenge has been balancing the demands of running a small business while teaching full-time. Both require creativity, energy, and focus, and it’s not always easy to give each the attention it deserves. Time management and maintaining consistency in both areas have been a constant learning curve, but it’s taught me resilience and prioritisation in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
How do you stay inspired when developing new scents or seasonal collections?
Inspiration often sparkles in unexpected ways — a glimmering crystal, the first crisp breeze of autumn, or the cozy warmth of a spiced latte. Crystals play a special role, too; their colours, energies, and natural beauty guide me in blending scents that feel harmonious and uplifting. I experiment with combinations until each candle captures the mood, the story, and a touch of magic, creating a little sensory escape for anyone who lights it.

What’s your favourite hidden gem or local business in Kent?
One of my favourite local spots has to be Foliage in Broadstairs. It’s a beautiful plant-and-coffee shop that feels like a little oasis—lush greenery, calming vibes, and a welcoming space to relax or browse. They also offer plant-care advice and host small workshops, which makes it feel like a real community hub rather than just a shop.
I love supporting places like this because they share the same values as Wax & Whimsy: thoughtful, intentional, and designed to bring a little calm and joy into people’s lives. It’s exactly the kind of spot where I imagine my candles fitting in perfectly.
How can people find out more, book a workshop, or shop your latest collection?
