If you’re looking for the perfect day out in Kent, Whitstable is hard to beat — full of seaside charm, delicious food, unique shopping, and plenty of things to do by the sea - this much-loved seaside town delivers instant holiday vibes — even if you’re only visiting for the day. Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or just for a solo escape, here’s how to make the most of a day in this beautiful Kent coastal town.

Breakfast

If you’re planning a busy day exploring Whitstable, a good breakfast is the perfect place to start. My first stop is always Grain & Hearth, famous for its freshly baked sourdough bread and tempting array of pastries. Grab a croissant or a bacon sandwich to go, or settle in for their “stuff on toast” — thick slices of their gorgeous Whitstable wild sourdough topped with your choice of egg, bacon or beans. Their house-made granola is also a great option if you’re after something lighter.

Another favourite is Juniors Deli. It’s a little walk out of town, but definitely worth it. Go for the French toast, or try the croissant supreme stuffed with sausage, bacon, egg and cheese. If you miss it at breakfast, it’s also a great spot for lunch thanks to their homemade focaccia sandwiches.

You could also try Fram & Harper, which offers a great range of breakfast options. Alongside the classics like bacon sandwiches, they also serve more indulgent dishes such as croissant loaf French toast, bacon banana bread, and the Three Little Pigs — a sandwich packed with sausage, bacon and black pudding.

At the weekend, Samphire offers a tempting brunch menu with pancakes, a full English and a good range of veggie options — perfect if you’re starting the day a little more slowly.

You could also head to The Bubble for amazing views over the beautiful Whitstable harbour, or Beach Cafe if you’re after a traditional café serving up hearty breakfasts.

Morning in Whitstable

After breakfast, a stroll along Whitstable seafront is the perfect way to continue your morning. Walk past the iconic colourful beach huts towards Tankerton, and if the tide is right, explore The Street, a quiet shingle spit that stretches into the sea.

For those who like to explore with a coffee in hand, Whitstable has plenty of great spots to grab one. Blueprint Coffee, Garage Coffee and Hat Hats at the South Quay are all perfect for a takeaway before heading off for a wander.

The harbour is bustling with activity — fishing boats, market stalls, crabbing and plenty of opportunities for boat trips. You can take a boat trip with Whitstable Boat Trips and my must-do recommendation is a trip out to the Red Sands Sea Forts — they’re such a striking sight out at sea. If you’re visiting with children, they might prefer a wildlife boat trip to spot seals instead. You can also take a trip on the Greta, a sailing barge built on 1982 or even ride a vintage lifeboat around the harbour, which is a really fun and unique Whitstable experience.

Lunch in Whitstable

Whether you're after a light bite or a leisurely lunch, Whitstable has plenty to choose from. Grain & Hearth and Juniors Deli are just as popular at lunchtime as they are for breakfast. Grain & Hearth's massive grilled cheese sandwiches are not to be missed, while Juniors Deli serves generously filled homemade focaccia sandwiches that are well worth the walk. Le Petit Cafe serves galettes — savoury buckwheat crêpes filled with a variety of fillings — and sweet crêpes for a treat. If you're visiting with children, The Woodfire Kitchen is always a great choice, serving delicious wood-fired pizzas and their popular dough bowls in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. No visit to Whitstable is complete without stopping at Wheelers Oyster Bar for scallops, tiger prawns and, of course, oysters. I'd recommend booking a table if you plan to eat in, but if there's a queue, grab one of their picnic boxes to enjoy by the harbour and pick up a drink from The Offy across the road.

For something on the go, head to South Quay Shed and the harbour market for takeaway options, my favourite is a slice of pizza from Stern Slices. If you're on the hunt for fresh oysters, you'll also find them at West Whelks, The Forge, The Oyster Shed, The Lazy Lobster and the Whitstable Oyster Company, each putting their own spin on this famous local delicacy.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, take some time to explore Whitstable’s independent shops and charming streets. You’ll find plenty of unique places to browse, from And Danu, a beautiful clothing boutique selling clothes and jewellery designed in Whitstable, inspired by the coast and made in Kent, to George’s, which is packed with fun and unusual items that are perfect for treating yourself or picking up a gift. If you’re visiting with children, Toys N Trends is always a favourite stop. Book lovers should also pop into Harbour Books, a wonderful independent bookshop filled with an amazing range of fiction and non-fiction. Don’t miss No. 86, where you’ll find a gorgeous range of pre-loved clothing alongside rich, eclectic boho homeware. Whether you’re searching for a souvenir or simply enjoying a leisurely wander, Whitstable’s independent shops are all part of the town’s charm.

If the sun is shining, the beach is the perfect place to slow the pace. Children will love playing on the pebbles, skimming stones, or heading to the harbour to try a spot of crabbing — always a favourite Whitstable pastime. If you’re after something a little more relaxing, book a session at Sea Scrub Sauna, where you can unwind in a wood-fired sauna right by the sea before cooling off with a dip in cold plunge barrels. It’s a wonderfully peaceful way to experience Whitstable’s coastal charm.

Afternoon Treats

Whitstable is full of tempting treats to keep you fuelled for the afternoon. Pick up one of Grain & Hearth's famous cruffins, classic pick-and-mix from Honeykanes, or an amazing ckae creation from Bon Bon Cakes by the train station

Ice cream lovers have plenty of options. The harbour ice cream van offers a classic soft-serve whip, Bears Ice Cream serves inventive cone creations and bear-shaped ice creams for kids, Morelli’s is perfect for huge indulgent sundaes, and Whitstable Gelateria provides silky smooth gelato. These indulgences are ideal while strolling the seafront or relaxing on the beach. For drinks, pick up a takeaway beer from The Seafarmers Dive and enjoy it on the beach, or stop for another coffee at any of the morning spots.

Dinner in Whitstable: From Tapas to Seaside Seafood

As the day winds down, Whitstable has plenty of fantastic options for dinner. The Lazy Lobster serves seafood-inspired tapas, while Harbour Street Tapas is perfect for sharing a variety of small plates. Drift is a family-run bistro where seasonal dishes are cooked over fire, and Keller pairs an excellent wine list with charcoal-cooked small plates and sharing dishes.

Samphire offers a beautifully curated seasonal menu that showcases fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

If you're celebrating a special occasion or simply want to treat yourself, round off your day with dinner at The Sportsman. One of Kent's most acclaimed restaurants, it's renowned for its exceptional tasting menu, showcasing the very best seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Just be sure to book well in advance, as tables are highly sought after.

If you're heading towards Tankerton, JoJo’s is a great spot for meze-style sharing dishes, perfect for grazing with friends or family. Nearby, Land and Sea serves fresh meat and fish dishes, with a menu of both big plates and small plates made for sharing while Basil & Co serves some of the most delicious Italian dishes around.

If you fancy taking food down to the beach, a pizza from Nomad is perfect for a relaxed seaside bite. Or go for a classic takeaway fish and chips — there are a few great options in town, but Ossie’s is our favourite for generous portions to enjoy straight from the paper by the sea.

Evening Drinks and Bars in Whitstable

Whether you're looking for a pre-dinner drink or a nightcap, Whitstable has a fantastic selection of bars to round off your day. Amedea, a half-Croatian-inspired wine bar, is one of my favourites, serving delicious sharing boards alongside their addictive roasted red pepper dip that you simply have to order. The Twelve Taps is the place to go for craft beer lovers, with 12 beers on tap and a great selection of gin. If wine is more your thing, Vinko has a brilliant, knowledgeable team who are always happy to recommend a bottle or glass to suit your taste, complemented by a menu of small plates and cheese boards. Harbour Gin Bar is the place to sample locally distilled Harbour Gin, while Porto Bar is a cosy spot to enjoy wines, ports and tapas-style dishes that are perfect for sharing.

For a more laid-back end to the day, grab a takeaway beer from The Seafarmers Dive and head down to the beach to watch the sun set over the sea. It's one of my favourite ways to end a day in Whitstable

Wrap-Up

After a full day of Whitstable seaside walks, delicious food, shopping, and harbour fun, you’ll leave with a real taste of what makes this Kent town so special. From breakfast pastries to ice cream by the harbour, from boutique shopping to crabbing and boat trips, Whitstable offers the perfect day trip by the sea for families, friends, or solo explorers. Whether you finish your evening with seafood, tapas, or a relaxed drink while watching the sun set, Whitstable’s charm stays with you long after you’ve left. Pack your walking shoes, bring your appetite, and plan your own unforgettable Whitstable day trip — it’s a seaside adventure you won’t want to miss.
